It’s late in the day, and Ryan tells us that everyone is on edge. Maybe Deborah Dawn Tilley [formerly known as Deborah Dawn Black] can save the day. She’s a rocker chick who has been in a band since she was seven years old. She tells us that people recognize her by her hair, calling her “Lady big hair.” Her hair looks a bit like straw, and she has a lot of it. She sounds something like Melissa Etheridge, not bad, but not great either. Although Paula thinks she is a little bit much, she gives her the nod. Randy isn’t blown away by her vocals. As I pointed out in an earlier set of Flickr album (shown here, I do not dance the tango, and I know little or nothing about its history, its folklore, or even its steps and rhythms. I'm vaguely aware that it originated in Argentina (and Uruguay) in the 1890s, that a new style known as "tango nuevo" began to emerge in the late 1990s, and that various actors and actresses -- including Jessica Biel, Colin Firth, Antonio Banderas, Madonna, Richard Gere, Jennifer Lopez, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Arnold Schwarzenegger(!), among others -- have performed the tango in various movies. But beyond that, it never really occurred to me that it played any significant role here in the U.S.
That is, not until the summer of 2009, when I happened to return to my hotel, on a business trip to Washington, DC, just as a local gathering of tango aficionados was dancing to their music in a nearby square known as Freedom Plaza. I photographed the event (see my Flickr set Last tango in Washington) and learned from one of the participants that there were similar informal events in New York City, at the South Street seaport, during the summer and fall weekends. When I got back to New York, I searched on the Internet, and found a schedule of upcoming tango events just as my Washington acquaintance had indicated; but travel schedules, inclement weather, and other distractions prevented me from actually attending any of them; by the end of the autumn season, I had forgotten all about it.
For some reason, something reminded me of the tango again this spring -- perhaps some music that I overheard, perhaps a scene on some otherwise forgettable television show. In any case, I searched again on the Internet, and discovered that a tango "event" would be taking place on a Sunday afternoon -- but not at the South Street Seaport (on the east side of Manhattan, near the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges), but rather at Pier 45, where Christopher Street runs into the Hudson River in Greenwich Village. The event takes place every Sunday, usually from 4-8 PM, and I made my first visit in mid-April, which led to this set of photos.
I decided to come back again in mid-July, even though I knew it would be much hotter ... and indeed, it was so hot that the music did not even begin until 6 PM. But then the dancers began to appear, one couple after another, until there were a couple dozen couples filling a large space under a sheltering canopy. And since it was the end of a hot summer evening, tango wasn't the only thing going on: there were people sunbathing, watching the boats on the river, playing frisbee, or simply enjoying themselves. I photographed a little of everything; you can focus your attention on whatever you'd like...

Pascale Hutton grew up in Creston, BC and studied acting at the prestigious University of Alberta’s BFA program. Upon graduating, she worked in theatre, but quickly started booking roles in film and TV which prompted her to move to Vancouver.
She has worked on numerous Canadian and American TV shows and films including A Simple Curve, Flashpoint, Smallville, Rookie Blue, Fringe, Sanctuary, Flashpoint and Intelligence.
And she has been recognized for her work. Currently, Pascale is co-starring opposite Adam Beach on CBC’s hit new dramatic series, Arctic Air.

Canadian born and based, Paul Hardy took his career from design school graduate to personal shopper to acclaimed designer. Paul Hardy began his design career in 2002 with an opening show at Toronto Fashion Week where his first collection saw a host of rave reviews. After seeing his first collection, fashion icon Jeanne Becker, host of Fashion Television, compared Hardy’s talent as being that of the likes of Marc Jacobs or Stella McCartney.
The sensation caused by his first collection led Paul to pursue opportunities south of the border at Los Angeles Fashion Week. There he garnered the attention of notable industry media outlets such as WWD who described Paul’s style as “a thoughtful, well-made collection of soft sophisticated clothes.” Such reviews about the line sent a buzz across the United States to New York. His designs have been described as “Oscar worthy” by celebrity stylist Philip Bloch and the New York Post. Acclaim for Paul’s collections has continued over the seasons, Lisa Tant, editor of Flare Magazine, was quoted saying “He has vision and he’s achieved it at every step”.
In 2011, Paul began experimenting with lifestyle branding by taking on commissions pertaining to interior design. He also accepted an offer to collaborate with the Alberta Ballet, by designing all of the costumes for Sarah McLachlan’s ‘Fumbling towards Ecstasy Ballet’. The ballet received rave reviews from both the media and public and now has plans to tour this coming year.
Paul was honoured to be selected as one of six international emerging designers to go and showcase his upcoming Spring 2012 collection on a seven city tour in China.

Canadian-born Jessica Steen currently stars as Police Commissioner “Eva Braden”, in the Just for Laughs Television comedy series, Bullet in the Face with Eric Roberts and Eddie Izzard. Steen can also be seen as the sexy “Lisa Stillman” on the hit CBC series Heartland. She won a Gemini award for her dramatic performance in the TV movie Small Gifts and in 2010, Steen received a Gemini nomination for her gritty role on the highly-acclaimed series Flashpoint.
Jessica comes to her talent naturally and the age of eight, was cast in her first role in the Canadian children’s television series, The Sunrunners, co-starring her mother.
